THE PROCESS

A Snapshot of Otl Aicher’s Life

Objective of the project was to emanate the style of a historic designer via a magazine spread. I was inspired by his 1972 Olympics designs, specifically the pictographs he designed. He used a simple color palette, focusing on bold, primary colors. Overall his designs had geometric undertones, playfulness and are easy to interact with.

It all starts with the grid. Otl Aicher was well known for his use of grid systems in many of his designs. Through my research I found an image of the grid system he used for the Olympic pictographs/icons. I recreated it to design the icons used in the spread
